Message from the President & CEO

By Chris W. Brussalis

This year’s newsletter series is dedicated to the Olympic spirit and what it takes to perform and succeed among the most innovative and skilled competitors.  Our quarterly newsletters will focus on:

  • Putting together the right team,
  • Strategically planning for success,
  • Continually delivering high-quality products and services, and
  • Executing effective business development strategies to improve profitability.

Olympic athletes know that their success is essentially the function of two things: personal dedication and the support of outstanding coaches and teammates.    These individuals must be committed to a common cause while valuing the unique skills of each player.  They recognize each other’s strengths and work together to improve areas of weakness.  They celebrate victories, share the responsibility for loses, and implement new ideas to overcome obstacles.  Effective managers, like elite athletes, also know they are only as good as their team.  For this reason, we have dedicated this newsletter to strategies that will help you to attract, hire, and retain the right people.  Our articles explain emerging hiring practices and how to determine if your organization effectively cultivates employees and creates a positive organizational culture.  In addition, we discuss best practices for collaborative, demand-driven attraction and retention strategies.

Strategy and preparation is not a one-time event for athletes. It is a process of continuous improvement.  In fact, the time athletes dedicate to strategizing and training is exponential in comparison to the amount of time they spend competing on the ice, down the slopes, or in the air.  Likewise, strategic planning processes that engage key stakeholders are essential to professional and organizational success.  Strategic planning requires time and resources, but it can lead to long-term gains like increased revenue and innovation.  This spring, we’ll reveal how the strategic planning process is a profitable exercise in teamwork and communication.

Athletes achieve greatness because of extreme attention to detail.  They know small improvements, like shaving hundreds of seconds off the clock, can have a significant impact on personal and team success.  Athletes are constantly judged by those hired to do so in competition as well as tough critics in the media.  Similarly, organizations must pay extreme attention to detail when dealing with internal or external customers.  This summer, we’ll discuss how seamless, reliable service at all levels can improve your organization’s reputation.

Top athletes also understand how to best “package” themselves.  They work from a young age to attract top coaches and instructors who help them to actualize their potential.  Eventually, they can use their skills and star status to generate endorsement offers or influence public opinion on issues of personal significance.  In the fall, we’ll show you how to best package your organization’s unique competencies.  Our business development strategies will help your organization to enhance its offerings to current clients and turn prospects into satisfied customers.

How do you become an elite competitor recognized for best-in-class products or services?  The right team, a dynamic plan, excellent service, and strong promotion can help you to achieve a gold medal-winning year.

As always, we invite your feedback and suggestions.  We also plan to include articles written by our clients in future newsletters.  If you are interested in contributing to any of our upcoming editions, please contact me at cbrussalis@hillgroupinc.com.
